September 2020 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 19 Men’s Club ■ From Page 18 Member/Guest Invitational Tournament was canceled this year. In its place, a two-day, member-only tournament was developed under a totally different game structure. This event was played on the normal dates for the Invitational which was Aug. 6 and 7. The Shootout was open to Charbonneau Men’s Club members and featured two days of 18-holes play each day using a net Stableford Point System. Four-man teams were randomly assigned with team winners each day, plus individual aggregate winners for two-day total. A barbecue lunch from The Turn was served each day following the days play. ■ Two Day Gross: 1st: Gene Harp; 2nd Ford Morishita; 3rd Jim Gibbons ■ Two Day Net: 1st: Tom Taylor; 2nd Jerry Zeller; 3rd Dennis Jablonski Rule of the Month Since many of us are now reporting our scores with a new GHIN app, you may not be viewing the Bi-Monthly Oregon Golf Association Newsletter which contains discount offers and other interesting items including an excellent “Rule of the Month” section. The first August issue had a review of how to handle “deflections” on the course which occur when two balls collide with each other: Rule 11.1. The deflection of a ball at rest by another ball is considered an outside influence since it belongs to another player, the ball at rest must be replaced on its original spot, which if unknown must be estimated. The ball in motion has simply been deflected by an outside influence and is played as it lies. On the putting green the rules are different. As we all are encouraged to play “ready golf,” we do need to be careful so that two balls do not collide on the putting green. Under Rule 11.1b, if a ball hit from the putting green accidentally hits another ball in motion, each stroke is canceled and must be replayed with no penalty. If both balls were on the putting green before the stroke was made, the player making the stroke gets two penalty strokes. Boys & Girls Aid By ZOE NIKLAS The organization has been supporting foster children throughout pandemic This pandemic has affected much more than our health and economy, it has impacted our souls. The sickness, death and the fear is so prevalent; it is almost palpable. This is the time we need heroes. Yes, we honor NIKLAS first responders, medical teams, grocery store teams, teams of truckers keeping us supplied and on and on. But I felt I needed a local hero doing local heroics to make my ennui disappear. I am relieved to say, I found a team of spirited, gifted and determined women who are as inconspicuous as they are effective: The Cypress Auxiliary of Boys & Girls Aid. In the face of this pandemic, this group has been creative in their support for our foster children. It has been quite a year. It normally takes a large “village” over several months to pull off our annual Crab & Rib Dinner and silent auction, however this year, it took an army of the determined over nine months working together for a critical end result. Prior to the introduction of COV- ID-19, Anne Shevlin, Chris Bosak, and Elaine Swyt, co-chairs, planned the Crab & Rib Dinner event to be held in March 2020. Meanwhile, during October through January, nearly 50% of Cypress team members signed up to encourage local business to donate to the Crab & Rib Dinner. These teams demonstrated amazing tenacity and generosity to bring in so many gifts and donations from all over. Special See BOYS & GIRLS / Page 20 ROOF MASTERS INC.
