STRUCTURAL HEART DISEASE PROGRAM
Generally , structural heart disease programs focus on diseases involving the heart ’ s valves or other noncoronary structures of the heart . When it comes to this specialized area , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas brings additional specialties into the discussion to provide individualized , multidisciplinary care .
This team includes interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons as well as echocardiology specialists , advanced imaging experts and electrophysiologists . Expertise from boardcertified cardiovascular anesthesiologists is also vitally important . These highly specialized anesthesiologists work in concert with the team , differentiating the Dallas campus from others .
The Dallas program offers catheter-based and less invasive procedures , resulting in better outcomes for many patients . For example , the MitraClip ® device has grown as a treatment option for patients with mitral regurgitation who are not candidates for surgical valve replacement . In fiscal year 2020 , the program ’ s strong Center for Valve Disorders and Aortic Center received patients from across the country for conditions not readily treated in other areas . In fact , the hospital ’ s TAVR team was rewarded for their quality care by receiving the firstever High Performing recognition from U . S . News & World Report in the TAVR category . ( See dedicated sections for more information on these centers .)
As the level of structural heart disease treatment specialization is not readily available in the rural areas of Texas , several interventional cardiologists on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas traveled to smaller communities in fiscal year 2020 to assist providers in learning more about the various available treatment options .
