FIRST RESPONDERS / EMS OUTREACH
Quarterly STEMI case review
Interventional cardiologists on the medical staff of Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas met with teams of first responders / EMS each quarter to review at least three unique STEMI cases from the previous quarter . Each STEMI case review included an extensive feedback component comprised of culprit issue , procedure performed and discharge disposition . Survivors of these cases were also invited to attend with leadership from the corresponding EMS team to tour the catheterization lab .
Continuing education for first responders
In-services for area first responders have been offered in Tarrant County in collaboration with Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center - Fort Worth and cardiologists on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital - Fort Worth . While several learning opportunities were postponed in FY20 , the team looks forward to future educational collaboration with area EMS organizations .

PROMOTING HEALTHCARE CAREERS
Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas believes it is important to provide opportunities for youth to consider healthcare careers . The Community Health Needs Assessment indicated an opportunity to improve awareness for the broad variety of healthcare careers . Improving this awareness and exposure to these careers , specifically with at-risk youth , may lead to improved socioeconomic futures for families .
Throughout the school year , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas hosts students enrolled in health , science and technology programs at Title 1 schools . Title 1 funding is available to schools with at least 40 % of their students meeting lowincome criteria established by the federal poverty census . The funding is designed to assist schools in meeting the educational goals of low-income students . In fiscal year 2020 , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas hosted more than 120 students from Garland and Mesquite schools , as well as other surrounding schools , for regular training and work within the hospital .

2019 Mayor ’ s Intern Fellows Program students
During their rotation at the hospital , students observed multiple patient-facing environments , both clinical and non-clinical . Leaders also helped students prepare for their Health Occupations Students of America ( HOSA ) competitions .
Further sponsorships to support careers in science , technology , engineering and math ( STEM ) included supporting requests from various groups for hosting student tours , shadowing clinicians and physicians , as well as hosting summer interns paid through the Mayor ’ s Intern Fellows Program .
In fiscal year 2020 , as a part of the STEM Goes Red project of the American Heart Association , students from all over the Metroplex toured the hospitals in Dallas and Fort Worth , participated in hands-on learning , and met with hospital leadership . This is another program where the hospital team is strongly engaged in developing interest in young minds for healthcare careers .
