PHILANTHROPY
Our mission at the UAB Department of Neurosurgery is to provide
outstanding care to patients with neurosurgical diseases while educating
and training compassionate, proficient, and expert neurosurgeons and
neuroscientists through teaching, research, scholarship, and service.
Rapid and skillful improvements in patient treatment options can occur
when we have the resources to accelerate our research. Our faculty are
innovators, cutting-edge researchers, and vigorous educators of next-
generation neurosurgeons. Will you partner with us to shape the future of
neurosurgery?
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Neurosurgery is one of the youngest surgical disciplines. Although the field
has progressed considerably over the past decade, there are still many
important discoveries that need to be made to improve treatment options
for neurosurgical patients. There is a critical need for funding to invest
in innovative new ideas, recruit and retain top talent, and provide robust
training for neurosurgical residents.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
NEUROSURGERY RESEARCH ACCELERATION: Our faculty are conducting
research into the full spectrum of neurosurgical disorders including brain
tumors, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and neurovascular disorders, and
spinal cord injury and disease, as well as pediatric conditions. Investing
in research can support the translation of innovative new ideas from the
bench into clinical practice more quickly.
NEUROSURGERY EDUCATION: Training the next generation of talented
neurosurgeons is integral to elevating patient care. In order to train highly
skilled and intellectually curious neurosurgeons, our program emphasizes
evidence-based practice and clinical outcomes research. By supporting
our residents as Clinical Research Scholars, you underwrite their clinical
research projects, travel to scientific conferences, and other activities that
contribute to robust residency training.
Now is the perfect time to support the UAB Department of Neurosurgery.
By providing a philanthropic donation, you help us continue our important
work in the interest of patients – now and in the future.

‘In early 2009, I had
major brain surgery for
a malignancy in the third
ventricle and then a
successful gamma knife
radiation treatment. The
skills of my surgeon,
Dr. James Markert, and
his associates in UAB
Neurosurgery are an
amazing example of
medical excellence and
outstanding patient care.
Ten years later, I am
cancer-free. I strongly
believe that if not for my
outstanding surgical team
at UAB, my life would
have been very different.’
