EHB 2687 affordable housing planning / gma

AWB supported Engrossed House Bill 2687 , sponsored by Rep . Andrew Barkis , R-Olympia , which would have required cities and counties to plan for affordable housing under the Growth Management Act ( GMA ). The bill would have added housing as a mandatory element of the Comprehensive Plan and required counties to plan how to meet existing and future housing needs . The bill passed the House by a vote of 95-3 but it died in the Senate where it did not come up for a vote .
ESSB 6378 residential tenant protections

AWB opposed Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 6378 , sponsored by Sen . Patty Kuderer , D-Bellevue , which provides a series of new tenant rights for residential renters . Among other provisions , the bill requires new provisions for vacate notices and requires landlords to accept a pledge of emergency rental assistance by a government or nonprofit . The bill also prevents landlords from threatening evictions for failure to pay nonpossessory charges not related to rent owed and prohibits a court from awarding attorneys ’ fees to a landlord if the judgment is entered after a tenant ’ s failure to respond to a pleading or other notice requiring a response . After a lengthy debate , ESSB 6378 passed the House by a vote of 54-42 and the Senate by a vote of 30-18 .
