Fathers

“This is my favorite picture of my father
and grandfather giving grief to my
brother up at granddad’s place in
Greenhorn. Grandpa was mayor of
Greenhorn, population (of) three.
Grandma, grandpa and an old minor
summered in this mining ghost town
near Sumpter, Oregon. I love the joy on
the faces of dad and grandpa.”
— Shirley Hoem
“My father, Edward A. Hoem (1914-
2005), was born a farmer and became
owner of a light steel fabrication shop
which transitioned into ornamental iron
business. What I admire most was his
retirement hobby as a toymaker. In his
last six or seven years, dad fashioned exact
models of old trucks, dating back to
the 1920s and ‘30s. Phenomenally, he had
no patterns or kits, just two-dimensional
photos. Dad crafted two dozen or more
of these replicas entirely by hand from
scratch, and he had an interesting story
to tell about each one.”
— Eric Hoem
“The car. He let me shift the gears in
the car. I was about 8 years old, but I remember
how delighted I was and how
mortified my mother was. I always
looked forward to our family road trips.
When you are 8 years old and grow up
in the Northwest in the early ‘50s, there
is lots and lots of shifting to be done.”
— John McLain

Railroad. On one occasion he guided me
to the front engine cab of a GG-1 locomotive,
showed his ‘white’ pass and we
jumped up front on a passenger train
from New York to Philadelphia. I got to
run the whistle at road crossings and see
the tracks and terrain from the engineer’s
station. Pretty cool for a youngster.”
— Jake McMichael
“My favorite memories of my father
are of him teaching me to hunt and fish
in Hepner, Oregon. We hunted deer and
elk near our home and fished for trout in
local streams. He also taught me how to
drive his Model A.”
— Roy Taylor
“I grew up during the Great Depression
and remember my dad encouraging
me to find work and make money. I
started my own business at 10 years
old, working in the veal business — all
while continuing my education. I would
get free young male calves from local
dairy farms and raise them myself. I also
had a paper route in neighboring
communities. One of the things my dad
would often say is, ‘You never get what
you expect, you get what you IN-
SPECT.’”
