July 2020 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 9
Sunshine
Service
By JOAN VEDDER
Enjoy the Fourth of July,
despite limit on gatherings
Well, half the
year has gone already,
most of it
spent “hunkering
down” in our
homes and being
cautious. By the
looks of it, that
VEDDER
might continue
for some time to
come. I think we’ve cleaned cupboards,
painted fences, washed windows
and generally played catch-up
with ourselves. We’ve also learned
how much we miss each other.
The Sunshine Service has functioned
very well through all of this and we appreciate
how patient you’ve all been. I
will begin to call those of you who have
hung onto items you borrowed, and
have you return them now. You will
not have to enter the clubhouse! Once
you are notified of a day and time, you
can just deliver things to the front
door and our group of volunteers will
take it from there to sign you out. If
you need help getting things back to
us, we can arrange for a pickup at
your home.
An aside here, we were asked to
write a few lines about what July 4
means to us: I came from Canada in
1960 (married an American) and in
1967 I became a citizen. I attended
night classes for several months and
took my oath in the Court of San Francisco.
Having to “pledge my loyalties”
to the United States was very meaningful
for me. I took it seriously and
have voted in every single election
since then. Voting is truly a privilege
that many people seem to overlook.
Maybe if you actually had to study to
become a citizen, it would mean more?
I encouraged my children to vote and
now I’m working on grandchildren.
There’s power in numbers!
Enjoy the Fourth. Even though it
might be without a group, it’s still a
celebration for everyone.
Charbonneau
Book Club

In-person discussions
continue to be postponed
Here it is: July.
And we are still
not able to meet
in the clubhouse.
Our current
schedule of books
to read is finished
HOCHHALTER so I hope we can
have discussions
about the March through June reads
while we put together a new list.
Meanwhile, I asked Schuyler Wallace
who reviews books for Amazon to give
us a few ideas. Warren Adler’s “American
Quartet” has a neurotic millionaire
who concocts an assassination program
to kill the president after a weird call
from his sick mother. Schuyler says it is
well-written and imaginative.
“Ritz and Escoffier” by Luke Barr
writes about two men in the hospitality
business who opened grand restaurants
in Europe from the 1800s to 1900s that
are still functioning today. Schuyler says
it is one of his all time favorites.
“Out of Sorts” by Aurelie Valognes is
similar to “A Man Called Ove” by
Fredrik Backman and it is fun to compare
the two characters. “A Covenant
With Death” by Stephen Becker takes
us to a small town in 1922 and walks us
through an interesting law and order
story from murder, arrest, trial, aftermath
and a young judge with personal
problems.
Thank you Schuyler for these suggestions.
We regularly meet on the second
and fourth Tuesday of each month at the
Charbonneau clubhouse from 1-2:30 p.m.
So when we are allowed back to the
clubhouse for the first time, be prepared
to discuss the scheduled April books
“The Tender Land” by William Kent
Krueger and “Alone in Antarctica” by
Felicity Aston.
I am thinking that might be July 28. I
am looking forward to our discussions
and seeing everyone again. I can
be reached at dotsmyname@comcast.
