4 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER July 2020 President From Page 3 or sent in a proxy. Presently, we are dealing with COVID-19 and all the various ramifications it has had for our community, our state, and our nation. Now, the icing on the cake. As I am writing this article, CCC and CGC have reached a merger agreement and the shareholders have unanimously voted in support of this endeavor. Since the announcement of the Agreement and Plan of Merger, we have received overwhelming positive responses from Golf Club shareholders and residents alike. Thanks to all of you who have expressed your appreciation and support for the effort that has gone into putting this merger together over the past two years. It truly took the effort of many shareholders and residents working together for the future of our community. My purpose in telling the story of my six years on the CCC Board is to illustrate how much can happen in a short period of time. Life can be very interesting and very challenging. I encourage each and every one of you to get involved in the life around you in any way that you can. The CCC bylaws state that a board member can only serve two consecutive three-year terms. I am at the end of my second term. I am grateful for the new friends and confidants I have today that probably would not be part of my life if I had not served on the CCC Board. I am confident that the board members continuing on for the next few years are extremely qualified and they will work hard for the future of Charbonneau. It has truly been a gift and a pleasure to serve on this board for the past six year. Now, I am looking forward to more time with family and friends as the COVID-19 restrictions slowly come to an end. Be safe and God bless our community. Boys & Girls Aid By ZOE NIKLAS Independence for children in need The Fourth of July is our Independence Day celebration. This is the 135th Independence Day celebration for Boys NIKLAS & Girls Aid. Yes, for 135 years Boys & Girls Aid has been devoted to the foster children of Oregon. This amazing organization is working even harder than usual during the pandemic and has not laid off any staff. Having been a foster child myself, I applaud the work of Boys & Girls Aid. I feel like sending up fireworks to celebrate them. Having a forever family is vital. Having encouragement during growth is the breath of freedom. Boys & Girls Aid creates circumstances where children can learn to be successful. In this program children learn to be independent. Before coming to Boys & Girls Aid some of these children had been moved many times from one foster care home to another. The result of this is what is true for many foster children: chronic anxiety and depression, manifested by nightmares, sleep walking, eating disorders, food stealing, and antisocial behavior. I know this because it is what I experienced as a child. Particular effort is given to 16 to 23 year olds who are in the Transitional Living Program. The TLP provides the training and equipment that is needed for late teens to branch out on their own. They receive support in housing, financial education, skill building, recreational activities and how to set up an apartment. They also get equipment as needed for their independent living. People in our Cypress Branch of Boys & Girls Aid travel frequently to the TLP to provide training in cooking, money management, sewing, how to use Library services and many other things needed for each of these young people to become independent, successful adults. Due to the pandemic, Boys & Girls Aid and the Cypress Branch are learning new ways to support our foster children. Our monthly luncheons are being substituted by videos of our successes and the ongoing needs of our children. We are providing meals for children who usually get them through the school system but don’t right now. We are making masks for the many people involved in Boys & Girls Aid. We are contributing financially to the youth in the TLP who have lost their jobs and need to buy groceries. We are all learning new ways to live our lives, new ways to help each other and new ways to be independent of fear. We do not need to be and are not afraid to keep working. This is how we demonstrate our love of our fellow man. To learn more about the Cypress Branch of Boys & Girls Aid here in Charbonneau please go to www.cypressonline.org.
