Men’s Club
By JOHN MCLAIN
COVID-19 limits ability
for social, educational
golf gatherings
Is golf ready
to return to
normal? No.
Maybe. Slowly.
Normally, the
Men’s Club tries
to improve things
a little each year.
MCLAIN
But then this is
not a normal
year. We are lucky to be playing golf
at all. Even the national golf industry
has had to make significant adjustments
due to the virus crisis.
The U.S. Open Tournament and many
others have been postponed. And we
too have made similar adjustments. The
couples holiday event on Memorial Day
was completed, but without the traditional
and popular social dinner afterwards.
And at the recent June board
meeting, other changes were made that
confirm this is not a normal year.
No Invitational Tournament this year
The pandemic crisis significantly limits
the ability to bring together a large
number of members and their guests,
and is likely to continue to be a limitation
for several months. Businesses
have been damaged by the crisis and
are financially limited in their ability to
purchase advertising for the two-day
tournament. The virus may rebound as
the state and county opens up for limited
business operations, trying to return
to a new normal. The board has approved
a plan to cancel the Invitational
Tournament because it is not possible
to live up to the traditional two-day golf
and social format. In its place, there will
be a replacement golf event. Details will
be announced at a later date.
Charbonneau Cup and Hole In One
Prize Pool (HIOPP)
As of June 6, the course is still in
“modified cups mode.” However, the
cups and traps may return to a normal
status in the coming days and weeks, according
to the head pro. When the
course is back to normal, the Charbonneau
Cup points will begin to accumulate
for Men’s Club events. The HIOPP will
also open to members who attain that rare
accomplishment — a hole in one.
June 20 Equipment Seminar
Until the crisis rules allow for a large
group gatherings, this educational
event has been postponed indefinitely.
Check the website for the most current
18-game schedule.
The crisis continues to cause the
Tournament Committee (Chairman
Laurin Larsen) to adjust the 18-hole
game schedule. The website will usually
be the most up-to-date list of events.
Events schedule
Regular Play Days: Sign up for 18
holes on Wednesdays and Saturdays
with Pro Shop staff by 2 p.m. the day before
play for a golf-only event. For major
events that involved catering, sign
up seven days in advance.
The Pro Shop staff will handle all
sign-ups and payments for 18-hole golf
and social events for the 2020 season.
The process for signing up for 9-hole
events has not changed. Golfers will enter
their name on the sign-up sheet in a
binder in the clubroom of the Pro Shop.
Exceptions: Some events may be a little
different (e.g. Invitational Tournament
or Season Finale).
The following events are tentative,
due to the governor’s rules on who,
what, and when certain restrictions
are lifted. Golf is likely to occur, but
any social or educational component
is not assured.
 July 4, Independence Day Golf;
Couples event
 July 11, 18-hole Guest Day
 July 15, Men’s Night Out
Aug. 6-7, Replacement Event for Invitational
Tournament
Reminders
Thank you to all the members who
have stepped up to keep the course in
great shape. Keep up the good work.
Repair ball marks on the green.
Please fix several at each green you visit.
Pick up broken tees. Please collect
and deposit broken tees in designated
boxes or in trash bins.
Putt it out. Please do not “pick it
up” on those two-foot putts during
Men’s Club competitive events.
 Shout “fore!” As the weather
warms up, there you may find there are
non-golfers walking on the course during
your play. Please remember that the
only gentleman thing to yell at a nongolfer
walking on the course is “fore!”
You should call the Pro Shop to notify
them of the walkers but yelling unkind
words at non-golfers is not acceptable
Men’s Club behavior. Besides, you
might find yourself yelling at your playing
partner’s wife or family member (it
can happen to you).
CCC Activities
By KIM HOSFORD
Two opportunities for
summer fun coming up
Working within the government
guidelines, the clubhouse opened for
some limited activities and meetings
June 7. We are looking forward to
seeing more participation while
keeping physically distanced and
safe. In this uncertain time, changes
occur daily so keep checking our
CCC website for updates to our calendar
and be sure you are on our
email list so you receive our up- todate
communications.
Jetboating on July 9
Bring a jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen
and a snack lunch for this fun
river adventure! A two-hour scenic
Jetboat tour is planned, featuring Portland
history, wildlife and the Willamette
Falls. This day trip will happen
Thursday, July 9. Tickets are $65 and
include transportation to and from
Charbonneau. This is a thrilling ride so
you will need to sign a waiver, however,
my 80+ year old mother did this and
loved it. We will depart Charbonneau
