“ We want to do everything we can to grow that sector and to make sure we ’ re at the leading edge ,” says City of Woodland Mayor Pro Tempore Tom Stallard . “ AgStart is the platform for people to come to develop their idea and to attract the attention they need to get venture capital .”
Stallard says another big part of the city ’ s plan to support the growth of agriculture ’ s role as a tradable sector will be the creation of the Woodland Research and Technology Park , which it sees as a permanent home for companies that develop under AgStart . Stallard says the facility , which is modeled after North Carolina ’ s Research Triangle Park , will include 2 million square feet of commercial space spread across 150 acres plus another 350 acres of housing , trails , bikeways and other lifestyle amenities . He says he expects the first spaces , which will be custom built to meet tenants ’ needs , to be completed and occupied within two years .
While Aggie Square , the California Mobility Center and AgStart will initially support different growth sectors in the regional economy , Stallard says they all have the goal of being part of a collaborative effort to grow the region ’ s stature as a source for innovation and the development of cutting-edge research that leads to an expansion in tradable goods that benefits the area as a whole .
“ We want to be the best not only for ourselves but for the region ,” says Stallard . “ We all want to lift our communities , help alleviate poverty and expand opportunities for people . When you bring people at the higher end of things together and start making things happen , it lifts everybody and helps more people become more successful in their lives .”
