Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
We’ve treated nearly 500 infants with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE, in our
NICU, making us one of the most experienced centers in the world providing therapeutic
hypothermia treatment. That experience has allowed us to develop detailed, evidence-based
clinical treatment pathways. But it’s not just our NICU team.
Our HIE team of board-certified neonatal intensivists and NICU-specific therapists
collaborates with teams all over Children’s Colorado. Continuous EEG interpretation is
available 24/7, and pediatric neuroradiologist interpret all brain imaging studies. And when
patients are ready, we offer a seamless transition to our Neonatal Brain Injury Clinic.
Neonatal surgery
We perform more than 400 neonatal surgeries per year, following patients from prenatal
diagnosis through delivery and beyond. Our level of expertise in postnatal imaging and
interpretation, neonatal surgery and neonatal intensive care allows us to understand and plan
for each baby’s future care. Our neonatal multidisciplinary team works closely together to
coordinate post-surgical and specialized care.
Not every baby born at the Colorado Fetal Care Center will need neonatal surgery, but due to
the complexity of conditions treated here, about 70% of them will.
Pulmonary Hypoplasia Clinic
Pulmonary Hypoplasia Clinic at Children’s Colorado is the only multidisciplinary clinic
in the Rocky Mountain region offering complete, long-term care for children with small,
underdeveloped lungs, including pulmonary hypoplasia, pulmonary hypertension and
related conditions.
Our nationally ranked pulmonology and neonatology programs work collaboratively with
teams all over the hospital to wrap in every aspect of these patients’ care, including ongoing
evaluation of their neurodevelopmental, behavioral and nutritional health, as well as any
surgical needs that may arise.
Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program
At Children’s Colorado, our neonatal nurse practitioners, or NNPs, ensure that the smallest
patients get the treatments they need to thrive. With the experience and expertise to deliver the
highest level of care for critically ill newborns, our NNPs serve families and communities across
the Front Range, playing a crucial part in bringing high-quality neonatal care close to home.
Our Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program has also achieved Accreditation
with Distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Practice Transition
Accreditation, which validates hospital residency or fellowship programs that transition
registered nurses and advanced practice nurses into new practice settings. These programs
must meet rigorous, evidence-based standards. Our fellowship is the first ANCC-accredited
program of its kind in the nation.
