Fetal and obstetric anesthesia
Our fetal and obstetric anesthesiologists make up an integral part of the care team , meeting with parents and families prior to deliveries and fetal procedures and are available around the clock . Our anesthesiology team develops a plan for each patient based on their specific needs , medical history and type of procedure , making sure mothers and babies are comfortable and safe at all times .
Our fetal and pediatric surgeons can perform many operations in utero or at the time of delivery , including fetoscopic procedures for twin-twin transfusion syndrome , open fetal procedures for myelomeningocele repair , and EXIT procedures , among others . Our care team also assists with labor and delivery , a unique experience for every patient . Our goal is to ensure the most comfortable and stress-free delivery possible for the mother and the best possible outcome for the baby . That ’ s why we coordinate closely with our Neonatal Intensive Care and Cardiac Intensive Care units to care for babies immediately after delivery .
Excellence in obstetric anesthesiology
We are one of just 39 centers worldwide with a Center for Excellence in Obstetric Anesthesiology designation from the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology , or SOAP .

Our high volumes not only allow for the development of highly
specialized teams and standardized approaches to care, they also
build our surgical and medical sub-specialists’ experience and
expertise. That’s why we say, here, the rare is common.
Nationally ranked #6 for heart care and surgery by U.S. News & World Report, our
Heart Institute is one of just eight stand-alone pediatric heart research centers in the
country. That focus on innovation leads to less invasive procedures, and our cardiac
units provide state-of-the-art recovery and monitoring for acutely ill and post-surgery
cardiac patients. Staffed by a group of highly specialized physicians and dedicated
nurses, our CICU works closely with our surgery and anesthesiology teams, among
others, to nurse these fragile patients back to the best possible health. Just a few of the
reasons we meet or exceed the national average in:
• Extremely low levels of radiation exposure in our Cardiac
Catheterization laboratory
NICU mortality, despite high-risk
patient population

Volumes matter. Children’s Colorado’s NICU is among the highest-
volume centers in the U.S. for high-complexity patients, meaning
we see more and treat more neonates with complex congenital
conditions and severe complications of prematurity than most other
centers. Yet our survival rates rank among the best in the nation.
