, and Canada . Michigan got its name by the lakes - the Native American word Michigan means
“ big lake ” . It fits because 40 % of Michigan is covered in water .

Lake Superior is superior because it is the biggest lake , measuring 31,700 square miles . Then Lake Huron comes in second with 23,007 mi . Lake Michigan is close , with 22 , 404 square miles . Then Lake Erie is significantly smaller , having only 9,910 square miles . But Lake Ontario is smaller , with only 7,340 mi . But still that is a lot of freshwater !
