C 8 PM THURSDAYS OCT 8 NOV 19 JAN 21 MAR 25 JUN 10 JUN 17 Pablo Ferrández OCT 8 NOV 19 JAN 21 MENDELSSOHN SCOTTISH SYMPHONY DVOŘÁK SYMPHONY NO. 8 ELGAR ENIGMA VARIATIONS Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann leads the BSO in Edvard Grieg’s First Suite from Peer Gynt, featuring the hypnotic “Dance in the Hall of the Mountain King.” Another piece rich in folk flavor is Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony with its nostalgic portrait of the Czech countryside and rollicking dances. Haydn wrote his Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat Major as a charming showpiece for an unusual combination of solo instruments — violin, cello, oboe and bassoon. Bright in spirit and full of wit, this work will show off the solo skills of four of the BSO’s talented musicians. Conductor Cristian Măcelaru leads Elgar’s popular Enigma Variations and the beautiful Variaciones concertantes, Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s most popular work. The program opens with Jake Heggie’s Moby Dick Suite from his 2010 opera on Melville’s iconic novel. Austrian conductor David Danzmayr leads the Orchestra in Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10, the searing first movement of a symphony he did not live to finish, as well as Mendelssohn’s beloved “Scottish” Symphony with its echoes of folk tunes and evocations of Highland warriors. Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández, a prizewinner of Moscow’s International Tchaikovsky Competition, joins the Orchestra for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.
