MAYORGA: The field of dentistry is constantly evolving and changing. There are always new techniques or products being developed that I enjoy learning about. As a dentist, I also have the opportunity to help people not only with relieving them of pain but also educating them about the importance of oral health and their overall well-being. 202: As a woman, what challenges have you had to overcome in this industry? MAYORGA: Although the industry of dentistry has been dominated by men, I think a lot of patients are happy and relieved to see a woman dentist. I think a lot of the challenges we have are associated with gaining respect in the healthcare community as an integral part of a patient’s overall well-being. 202: What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had during your dentistry career? MAYORGA: A young lady once came into our office who wouldn’t speak without covering her mouth. She was embarrassed and in pain. Her main concern was her pain but when we finished with treatment, she was able to speak and smile without embarrassment. I now see that young lady at her place of work and her confidence is a complete 180. She smiles and speaks to customers without any hesitation 202magazine.com / SEPTEMBER 2013 / 202 MAGAZINE 25
