/ 202 PUBLISHER’S WORDS / greetings and salutations
The Dalai Lama, when
asked what surprised
him most about
humanity, answered
“Man. Because he
sacrifices his health in
order to make money.
Then he sacrifices
money to recuperate his health. And
then he is so anxious about the future
that he does not enjoy the present; the
result being that he does not live in the
present or the future; he lives as if he is
never going to die, and then dies having
never really lived.”
I
recently ran across this quote from the Dalai Lama and it really hit home. It
reminded me why I started 202 Magazine and what our objective is every month –
to bring inspiration to East Valley residents through the people, places and things
that inspire us to live our fullest lives. The operative word: Live!
The Dalai Lama’s words describe how my life was unfolding prior to starting the
magazine. More recently, the passing of Jon Flora, president of Fry’s Food Stores, at
the ripe age of 58, serves as a great reminder that the single most important element in
leading a full, inspired life is balance. I’m not talking the balance between work and play.
Jon Flora was a great man who gave back to his community and treated his employees
well but literally worked himself to death. I’m talking the balance between the heart and
the mind. Creating that balance by developing cheerful gratitude, engaging your heart
with compassion and developing a heart of forgiveness.
Live from your heart. Exercise your mind, body and spirit and get them in sync; then
go forth and do what is yours to do. Like the people we highlight this month and like
others dealing with breast cancer, once you accept what has been given to you or put
in front of you and sync your heart and mind, you can begin to live your fullest, most
inspired life.
