Basket Ball K H it
Basket Ball has had quite a revival and in view of contests with other teams the rules have been somewhat changed , principally with regard to the throwing-in " and “ fouls .” There arc now forty girls playing in the Upper School , and by their own request the Lower School has entered a team which promises well to be ready to fill any vacancies .
Last term games were very keenly played , three days in the week , and players even turned out from their downy couches to have a game before breakfast . But , after the holidays , until February 10 , King Winter held his own and refused to allow any intrusion . Since then , however , real work has been done by all and great improvement can be noticed in individual play .
The climax came with the cup match between the four forms on March 13 and LI . The Sixth versus the Fifth were victorious by one only , which goes to prove how well the game was fought out . The losers as well as the winners have to their credit that a prettier game was never seen on the field of Crofton House .
The Third played a very plucky game , for odds were greatly gainst them , and showed fight in the right spirit until the last basket was made , ever undaunted by their continuous defeat .
On the following day the final excitement took place and the contestants faced each other with pleasant determination plainly written upon each countenance . At the first shrill pipe of the whistle the struggle began , and such a struggle ! They wrestled on , each making baskets , until half time , when a stroke of ill-luck met the Sixth , losing their centre on account of a twisted ankle received in the first half . A substitute from the Fifth was quickly found , who did splendidly , playing her best for the team against which she had striven so hard the previous day . Although the difference between scores was wide the play was close and even and where all are good it is invidious to make distinctions among the players .
The Fourth came off the field triumphant amid shouts and cheers from all sides . The cup was presented by Miss Gordon ( as Mrs . Humphreys , the giver , was not here ), who took much pleasure in allowing the captain of the winning team to carry it joyfully to her form room . For three years has she worked to win for her form this trophy and well does she deserve to have it .
Three cheers for our Coach , who had worked steadily with the teams and at last has her reward in seeing correct play from Form 11 . to Form VI .
