Of Careers
Even yet all women do not realize the splendid positions in the world which they could fill , and of those who do few listen to this knowledge , for there is always the spectre of public opinion before their eyes and the apprehension “ What will my friends think ?” They do hot realize that if they struck out for themselves and did not listen to Society ' s views on the subject , they would not be alone in their work , for others would follow — those weaker spirits who
need encouragement .
Do not think for one moment that being a worker in the world makes a woman hard and unfeminine . On the contrary , it gives her a more broad-minded outlook on life and therefore removes that hindrance to her natural justice — one-sidedness .
Seeing and hearing all views on a subject will help every man to come to a right decision . Is a woman so different . so inferior in intellect , that she cannot reach the correct conclusion when all the facts are placed before her ?
A certain person of our acquaintance , with eyes like stars and eye-brows like stripes , would fill the position of riding-mistress to perfection . Crop in hand and hat just a little to one side , with legs astride her horse and her " kleine katzen ” watching her with loving eyes from a safe distance , is it not easy to see her teaching her bebumpcd pupil to ride ?
J------ McL------ would make as dainty a bonnetted chauffeur as was ever seen in all Paris or elsewhere . it is easy to imagine our flaxen-haired and blushing damsel of artist fame with an apron ( a la pinafore ) hung ' round her neck , gazing with wild and haggard eyes — eyes filled with the divine fire of genius — upon the painted scene which is to inspire the world with awe and admiration .
We would not forget A------W-------with her wonderful powers of speech and argument fighting for the prisoners at the bar and convincing all with her clever orations .
