Rubens Ghenov in conversation with Elizabeth Ferrill
O SKILL LEVEL — OPEN TO ALL
CONCEPT Artists are often confronted with periods of stasis in the studio,
experiencing the need to push their work further but not necessarily
knowing how or to where. Since many artists spend a great deal of time
in solitude, this challenge can be particularly pertinent. This exciting
program, moderated by the Artistic Director of Painting, Drawing &
Printmaking, embarks upon an in-depth conversation with artist Rubens
Ghenov regarding the ways in which he spurs on his practice. We discuss
the methods that he uses to keep his imagery fresh, find new sources
of research and move his work into unexplored and fruitful territory. He
answers the questions that we as artists are often afraid to ask each other:
“Where do your ideas come from? How do you stay inspired?” — and
speaks about the choices artists make to take their work to the next level.
FACULTY Rubens Ghenov was born in São Paulo, Brazil and immigrated
to the US in 1989. He has shown nationally in both solo and group
exhibitions at Morgan Lehman Gallery (NY), Geoffrey Young Gallery (MA),
TSA Brooklyn (NYC), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rubens is an
Assistant Professor of Painting & Drawing at the University of Tennessee
Knoxville.
