Seeking for Curves:
bending wood Trays & Containers:
digital fabrication
Yuri Kobayashi Byron Conn
CONCEPT CONCEPT
CAD drawing experience required.
Transform a straight line to a
curved line, focusing on bending techniques to
explore creativity and expand design potential.
Students experiment directly with the material to
stimulate and lead ideas. Workshop participants
steam or cold-bend wood to achieve unique
organic lines and forms; the possibilities are
infinite. The result may not be a finished object.
Instead, there will be a collection of pieces for
future projects that may be a home accessory,
a component for furniture or pure sculpture. A
goal of this workshop is to learn basic bending
techniques and how to play with them.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
Students use
primary bending techniques and work with
small-dimensioned wood, pressurized wood
and Ash splint. They explore how bending
and twisting form curved lines. Form and
mold-making and drying methods will also be
introduced.
ACTIVITIES
The spirit of the workshop is
βto play with the material.β Throughout the
workshop, lectures and demonstrations take
place and plenty of hands-on work time is
provided to participants.
FACULTY
Born and trained in woodworking
in Japan, Yuri Kobayashi is a sculptor and
furniture maker whose work demonstrates a
crossing over the field of craft, art and design.
While maintaining her studio practice, Yuri
serves as a part-time faculty member in the
Department of Furniture Design at Rhode Island
School of Design.
Design and create experimental
and unique wooden trays and containers using
the CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled)
router in combination with traditional
woodworking techniques. Experiment with
creating and designing forms and textures
along with functionality and ergonomics.
MEDIA
& TECHNIQUES Students
create pieces using both CNC fabrication
and traditional woodworking. Projects vary in
material from solid wood to sheet goods. In the
beginning of the week, drawings are completed
in Fusion 360. Upon completion, objects
are
fabricated
and
assembled
using
necessary equipment.
ACTIVITIES
Demonstrations are given on
the CNC, as well as on traditional woodworking
equipment. Students are introduced to the
capabilities of CAD Drawing and the CNC,
which then design and fabricate a tray or
tabletop object. There will be presentations,
design discussions and demonstrations on how
to craft wooden trays and containers.
FACULTY
Byron Conn is a furniture designer
and educator who specializes in the intersection
of digital and traditional making techniques.
The unique traces of each method are used to
accentuate the strength, beauty and versatility
of materials. All products and services of Byron
Conn Design focus on honesty in design,
materials and process.
