The year-over-year picture is one take on the data. The next figure is a business cycle view. Each line on the chart
represents the previous business cycle peak. For instance, the 2008 figure represents the percentage growth in
jobs since the January 2008 peak (y-axis). The x-axis is the number of months into the expansion. The current
peak-to-trough-to-expansion is now the longest on record at 132 months (as measured by the labor market), but
until recently, one of the weakest we’ve ever seen.
