A CALL TO ACTION
Data that ’ s good for your health
After submitting a simple saliva sample , Healthy Nevada Project participants receive personalized , clinical reports on their health and wellness that include “ fun fact ” genetic traits and ancestry information , as well as notifications if genetic markers put them at risk for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) Tier 1 conditions .
These conditions , which are identified as having significant potential for impact on public health , include :
• Familial Hypercholesterolemia ( FH ): Increased risk for heart disease or stroke due to very high cholesterol levels from an early age .
• BRCA Positive 1 and 2 : Increased risk for breast , ovarian and other cancers .
• Lynch Syndrome : A precursor to colon cancer .
CDC Tier 1 conditions affect nearly 2 million people in the U . S ., and because genetic codes are often shared among relatives , family members may also be at risk . Which means even a single test result could lead to awareness that benefits multiple people . By discovering individual gene mutations , this critical research is giving affected Nevadans and their loved ones powerful knowledge that they can act upon and is shedding a revealing light on our state ’ s overall health status .
“ They told me that I had FH … I now eat a plant-based diet , exercise regularly and see a physician .”
