ORGANIZATION NAME CITY, STATE ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION NAME CITY, STATE ACTIVITY Connecticut Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services New Britain, CT On Monday, the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) kicked off NPW with a Connecticut NPW Forum, which included the presentation “The Physiology of Addiction: Effects of Drug-Taking Behavior on the Brain,” and announced winners of the NPW 2019 video PSA contest. On Thursday, DMHAS held “The Capitol Event” to formally recognize NPW in the community. DMHAS also created its own social media hashtag for the week, #CTPreventionWeek. Eva Life Giver Baltimore, MD In partnership with Behavioral Health System Baltimore, Eva Life Giver held a series of community events throughout Baltimore for NPW including a community outreach event at the Payne Memorial AME Church and activities with six local schools throughout Baltimore to support the schools’ Project Towards No Drug Abuse program.​ Fairfield CARES Community Coalition Fairfield, CT Fairfield CARES and Glorious Recovery celebrated the start of summer with Summer Fest 2019. This substance-free Memorial Day celebration included live music, tables for community prevention and recovery organizations to feature resources and informational materials, and space for banners and signage from all organizations promoting prevention and recovery. FCC Behavioral Health Campbell, MO FCC Behavioral Health met with its youth substance use prevention coalition for NPW, training its members on the substances covered by the daily NPW health themes. The youth members then provided peer-to-peer education sessions during NPW, aligning them with the specific daily topics. FFU, Inc., and the Orange County Drug Free Coalition Orange County, FL During NPW, FFU, Inc., and the Orange County Drug Free Coalition visited several schools in Orange County during lunch periods to provide students with prevention information and conduct fun activities. Using materials from SAMHSA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and other prevention agencies, they reached several thousand students and parents during the school events. Additionally, they provided local recreation centers with prevention resources to display. FHN Family Counseling Center Jo Daviess and Stephenson Counties, IL FHN Family Counseling Center helped schools in both counties hold either a dodgeball or kickball tournament to promote living a healthy lifestyle and undertaking alternate activities to avoid using alcohol or drugs; organized a moment of silence to honor prevention during school morning announcements; and provided schools in Stephenson County with Prevention Champion cards, asking students to identify a person in their life who encourages them to live a healthy lifestyle. Dothan High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) 20 Dothan, AL Eaton Regional Education Service Agency/Eaton County Substance Awareness Advisory Group Charlotte, MI Elevate—Waukesha County Drug Free Communities (DFC) Waukesha, WI 2019 OUTCOMES REPORT Dothan High School’s SADD program gave a presentation the week after NPW to share the hard truths about the effects of drugs and alcohol with students. The presentation featured a guest speaker from the local drug-free coalition and used Kahoot! to engage participants by asking questions about drug and alcohol facts. Eaton County Substance Awareness Advisory Group hosted its annual end-of-the-year Eaton County Substance Awareness Advisory Group Celebration and Luncheon during NPW. The event celebrated the community’s efforts to promote substance use awareness and community wellness, particularly among Eaton County youth. Highlights included the #Healthier2019 Photovoice Project by youth; a presentation and free Narcan ® training by the coalition’s #PreventionChampion, who is from a local Families Against Narcotics group; a showing of the top three youth-made videos from the NPW video contest; and the annual Prevention Champion awards for the county. The Waukesha County DFC program hosted its own prevention video contest. They posted youth-made prevention videos online for people to watch during NPW and selected a winner at the end of the week. 2019 OUTCOMES REPORT 21
