We collaborated with various departments: Quality Management, Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pharmacy, and electronic medical records (EMR) teams to propose initiatives to improve ITB pump patient safety:
1) Education of all spinal cord injury providers on ITB pump management and tracking, and signs and symptoms of baclofen withdrawal;
2) a chart flag in the EMR to notify of ITB pump status and need to interrogate pump upon admission;
3) ITB patient registry and refill database;
4) Revision of our ITB pump documentation; and
5) development of tracking processes within the pharmacy.
The project is ongoing and have implemented some of the initiatives already. We hope to have these plans in place fully by the end of the year.
