Community Partner: Dent Education Intern: Jevon Campbell Site Supervisors: Jessa Wais and Jacquelyn “Jackie” Thomas What is Dent Education? Dent Education promotes equity by empowering under-resourced youth to discover and develop their innate creative potential to shape the world around them. My experience at Dent Education this summer has truly been great. Coming in as the first CIIP in- tern to work with this organization and knowing the organization was only in its third year running was a little bit scary, as I wasn’t sure exactly what my role would pan out to be, or if there was a clear set of things planned for me to do. However, going into the experience with my full self, open-minded, and eager to help and make a difference, along with the support of the wonderful Dent Education staff really helped me find ways to contribute to the team and organization pos- itively almost right away. Having Jessa be my supervisor and share past experiences as a Johns Hopkins University student who did CIIP and knew the program inside out was extremely helpful as she was able to clearly communicate what she saw my role being to myself and to the rest of the Dent Education team. Also, she, being such a fun, supportive, and encouraging person, allowed my first few weeks at Dent Education to be very productive and educational. In addition to Jessa’s help initially, Jackie has been instrumental in supervising and guiding me through my CIIP experience as she from the first week met with me, got to know me and my communication preferences and style, and has served as my main line of support, especially after we transitioned to our YouthWorks Dent Sites, with encouragement and instruction. During my experience at Dent Education there has been so much opportunity for growth in both skill and understanding. The first few weeks for me I learned so much in terms of understanding how a nonprofit can work and the market itself, understanding how to internalize, embrace, and represent the brand of a company, understanding how to breakdown and organize multiple sets of information for an organization across multiple areas, and understanding how to brainstorm, collaborate, communicate, and express your feelings in a team setting. Furthermore, when work- ing with the students I got to develop my time management skills, paperwork organizational set- tings, leadership of groups of students through activities and transportation, presentation skills, and mentorship skills. This has really been a blessed summer for me. Thank you! 20 • Prepared essential administrative tasks to prepare for Dent’s flagship Bet on Baltimore summer program for YouthWorkers through arrang- ing logistics, communications, and attending YouthWorks employer trainings • Helped organize and facilitate coach onboarding, Dent’s training week for coaches, while also partic- ipating in it, learning about Design Thinking and the mission, vision, and values of Dent • Operated as Site Support/Su- pervisor at Loyola University of Maryland for Dent Media and Dent Fashion sites, which includes helping with YouthWorks records for timesheets and food, delivering food to Denters, and supporting/ instructing/guiding our Denters individually and in groups in the classrooms/workspaces
