Campaign Tips:
Prepare things way in advance! It can be an overwhelming process at times, and breaking it down into chunks—even if it begins with small list of tasks on your phone—will help you more easily navigate the process. As convention approaches, be absolutely certain that all of your materials are approved under the set guidelines and are ready for convention. The more you have done beforehand means less stress and more fun at convention! Write, edit, and practice those speeches, and if you can, try to plan out when and where you’ll need to be at convention. Preparing a schedule beforehand might help to ease some nerves and give you a better estimate of how far you can spread yourself out! Obviously, make sure to approach people at convention, and enlist the help of trusted members of your delegation to spread the word about you. For historians, make sure to look the part (i.e. make sure you have a camera around your neck while you campaign)! Take pictures, capture what’s going on around you, and interact with people. With a camera, you’re immediately identifiable as a historian, and it also doubles as a useful tool to capture memories! Enjoy the process.
Advice for Prospective Officers:
Before being elected, I strongly recommend that you become proficient working in some creative softwares! For making the scrapbook, you are likely to use either Joomag, Adobe InDesign, or Canva. If you can, I’d also recommend Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Illustrator as an added bonus in helping you during your term. Acquiring the skills to become artful and experienced in your work is one of the most worthwhile things you can do. During your term, you may have the free time to pursue a project or two outside the specified realm of your duties. Feel free to do what you please with it, but don’t get too ambitious with your platform and goals! Carrying out your main duties is ultimately what is most important. The position of Historian super rewarding in the end, so make sure to have fun with it!
The most important thing to know as a prospective candidate for your office:
The name of the position implies history, so make sure to respect it! Compiling the scrapbook can be a lot of work, so plan, stay on top of deadlines, and put your own creative kick into things! I can’t wait to see what you do. You’re always welcome to contact me with questions.
