HOW DO WE TALK ABOUT SUICIDE?
This year, nearly 170 new or returning organizations and federal partners joined
SAMHSA in spreading life-saving suicide prevention strategies to their constituents,
and collaboration across many tasks proved effective. For example, to inform
message concepts for the Awareness Day 2019 event, SAMHSA conducted
message testing about suicide prevention with audiences such as the Awareness
Day Executive Planning Committee members (see full list on page 18), family and
young adult representatives, and state mental health program directors.
Partners provided feedback on messaging throughout the planning process, and
this feedback informed both messaging and content development for the event.
Additionally, in collaboration with all partners and with special assistance from
SAMHSA’s Suicide Prevention Branch, SAMHSA updated the Awareness Day web
page to highlight resources for suicide prevention among children, youth, and
young adults, including crisis lines, professional resources, and youth and family
resources. Because the Awareness Day partners are experts on the topic of
suicide prevention, this collaboration was key to not only highlighting the essential
messages but also showcasing the resources that the partners produce in support
of children and families.

TWITTER CHAT
Several new partners were vital to social media efforts for Awareness Day 2019—in
particular, the #TalkYouthSuicide Twitter chat. On May 2, a group of collaborating
organizations held a Twitter chat on the topic of youth suicide prevention using the
hashtag #TalkYouthSuicide. Hosted by the American Association of Suicidology and
co-hosted by the American Psychological Association’s Public Interest Directorate,
the Twitter chat also included participants from the following collaborating
organizations:
•
•
•
•
American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
American Academy of Pediatrics
National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health
National Technical Assistance Network for Children’s Behavioral Health
(TA Network)
• Suicide Prevention Resource Center
• Youth MOVE National
