What to Expect for Advocates
What to bring

ID (you will need it for entrance to the Capitol Hill reception)
Notepad and pen for taking notes at training and in Hill meetings
Business cards (if you have them) so you can leave them with the people you meet on Capitol Hill
Comfortable shoes and professional attire for Hill meetings
Jacket and umbrella, if needed (check the weather!)
For the Capitol Hill reception, do not bring any food or beverages (incl. water, fruit, and unopened
packaged food) or large bags *The CVC is more strict about security and prohibited items than the
other Capitol buildings where you will be for your meetings – see here for a list of prohibited items:

Tuesday, March 26 – Training for Advocates
Time: 2:00 – 5:30pm
Location: Arnold & Porter, 601 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC

Wednesday, March 27 - Capitol Hill Meetings
Time: approximately 8:00 – 4:30pm
Location: Capitol Hill office buildings
*you will receive your schedule at training on Tuesday.
• You will be placed in a group of 3-4 other advocates and most groups will have an experienced
leader or “captain” helping you throughout the day. We formed groups based on the information
you submitted when you registered.
• Meetings are short – usually 15-20 minutes. If you are running late, please call the office (phone
number will be on your schedule) and let them know.
Wednesday, March 27 - Capitol Hill Reception
Time: 5:00 – 7:00pm
Location: Capitol Visitor Center, SVC 212-10 (The Capitol Visitor Center, the main entrance to the U.S.
Capitol, is located beneath the East Front plaza of the U.S. Capitol at First Street and East Capitol Street.)
Hill Meeting Best Practices (DOs and DON’Ts)

DO expect long lines to get through security at office buildings.
DO stick to the foundations’ priorities and your schedule.
DO take pictures and share your experience on social media with the hashtag
#BeeSupportiveofBAFunding and tag others (Members of Congress).
DON’T bring up other issues or politics (especially their campaigns or fundraising).
DON’T be offended if the staffer seems distracted or asks to meet in the hallway.
DON’T drop by other offices unscheduled.
