WVUSD: 2019/2020 Year-End Results
“Data Days” were held at elementary and secondary sites across the District to analyze results
from different programs (such as Title 1, English Learners, and International Baccalaureate) in
addition to data analysis for general education and special education students. Academic data
analysis, along with personal data analysis (academic, social-emotional, and relational factors)
were conducted for “at-promise” students.
The Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program continued to expand this past year with its very
first cohort of students moving into the 8 th grade. DLI 8 th graders will be testing with potential
placement in Mandarin 3 or 3-Honors at both high schools. Planning for the 2020/2021 school
year took place with the DLI teachers, Mandarin teachers from both high schools, and
administrators to align the DLI program with high school Mandarin programs. The regular
articulation between middle school DLI and the high school Mandarin teachers provided time for
the high school Mandarin teachers to assess the progress of the 8 th grade DLI students. The
formative assessments provided the teams with data to assist them in planning the transition
from middle school to high school Mandarin programs.
Writing was a continued area of emphasis across grade levels. The Lucy Calkins Units of Study
training and implementation continued at the elementary and middle school levels with improved
student-published writing. The 2 nd Annual WVUSD Writing Institute was held in June 2019 for
elementary and middle school teachers. Our District Units of Study coaches provided a threeday
writing institute on small group instruction, conferring and feedback, intentionality in teaching
the writing process, and targeted support for struggling students. Title I students received
focused, skill-specific instruction in small groups. At the high school level, annotating practices
were created and implemented. Feedback and individual conferring were emphasized with K-
12 writing. Elementary teachers had the opportunity to attend an after-school special on Units
of Study provided by our District Units of Study coaches. The session provided skills for working
with small group instruction, conferring, and preparing for CAASPP writing. Secondary ELA
teachers were provided with a professional development opportunity to use Turnitin as a tool to
provide feedback and formative assessment in writing.
Collaboration
WVUSD continued collaboration among instructional staff through a variety of opportunities.
Grade level articulation and planning took place within sites and across grade levels. Although
the school closures had already occurred, elementary and middle school principals and teachers
collaborated to determine 5 th to 6 th grade math placement criteria. Instructional learning walks
(at sites) focused on student engagement, and reinforcing and increasing collaboration across
grade levels.
Curriculum Councils included TK-12 teachers and SAI teachers serving our students with
moderate to severe disabilities. TK-5 Curriculum Councils, in the fall of 2019, focused on
common assessments, reading assessments, social and emotional learning, and best practices
to meet the unique needs of the grade level. K-5 Specialized Academic Instruction (SAI)
teachers focused their Curriculum Council collaboration on using Steps to Advance, writing
strategies, best practices for dyslexia, and fostering relationships and connections with students.
