Playful Prototyping : digital fabrication in clay
Brooks Oliver
II III
CONCEPT : Combine modern technology with age-old ceramics practices in a fun and lively workshop designed to be a playful exploration in developing forms with the help of digital tools . With the aid of 3-D printers and the CNC mill , students create prototypes for slip casting and press molding clay . We examine how these new innovative technologies can be an extension of our hands and how they inform process and influence design . You are encouraged to play and experiment with these tools in order to expand your own visual language .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore beginning and intermediate computer-aided design ( CAD ), focusing predominantly on Rhino 3D , the CNC milling machine and 3-D printing for generating prototypes using blue foam and PLA filament . Students plaster molds for slip casting and press molding . We use cone 10 clays for firing in oxidation and reduction .
ACTIVITIES : Each day includes demonstrations focused around software and digital fabrication techniques followed by hands-on work with machines , plaster and clay .
FACULTY : Brooks Oliver is a ceramics instructor and program coordinator at the University of North Texas and a studio artist based out of Dallas , Texas . He received his M . F . A . from Penn State University . Brooks was a resident at the Archie Bray Foundation , a recipient of NCECA ’ s 2017 Emerging Artist Award , and has taught in Jingdezhen , China , with West Virginia University .

2-D to 3-D : laser cutting Carter Hopkins
O
CONCEPT : Discover the two- and three-dimensional design fundamentals of laser cutting in this fun and intriguing workshop . Put your flat surfaces to work and learn the basics of drawing and cutting two-dimensional planes to make three-dimensional objects . Each student designs a project to be cut and assembled by the laser cutter . Focusing on flat sheet materials like plywood , medium-density fiberboard ( MDF ) and plexiglass , we explore the ability to design and assemble multi-piece structures .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We begin day one with hand drawings and sketches . We then discuss potential projects and assemblages , and digitally draw parts to be cut on the laser cutter . Knowledge of CAD or Illustrator software is not required , but experienced users are welcome .
ACTIVITIES : Demonstrations , discussions and instruction are given each morning and afternoon . Students are then immediately introduced to the workable materials to provide insight for potential projects and assemblages . Throughout the week , we discuss design intentions , and provide feedback in both individual and group settings .
FACULTY : Carter Hopkins is an educator and artist from Rochester , N . Y . He received his M . F . A . in furniture design from the School for American Crafts - RIT . With a background in fine art as well as woodworking , he utilizes his process of drawing and painting to inspire and create pieces of furniture . Carter is the Fab Lab Coordinator at Anderson Ranch .

critical dialogue
O
CONCEPT : In 1960s Los Angeles , the brimming art scene fostered a creative community that operated outside the pressures of New York City , including artists like Ed Ruscha , David Hockney , Bruce Nauman , Judy Chicago , Robert Irwin and John Baldessari . This workshop takes a captivating step back in art history to examine the madcap era in Southern California that cultivated the thriving cultural scene of today , focusing on icons like Andy Warhol , Frank Gehry , the Beach Boys , and Dennis Hopper . We also explore the significant and influential development of the use of collage and assemblage as an alternative to traditional painting or sculpture by taking a look at African American artists like Noah Purifoy and women like Alexis Smith and Betye Saar . Using these and other techniques , the program explores L . A .’ s unique history and the ways in which its artists produced their work .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Recommended reading : Rebels in Paradise : The Los Angeles Art Scene and the 1960s by Hunter Drohojowska-Philp
