Lesson Plan and Activities Lesson 3: Planning and Creating Your Art Essential Questions Enduring Understandings What are the advantages of using art (non-linguistic communication) instead of written or verbal means of conveying ideas? Personal and cultural introspection is the first step toward global competency. How does the process of creating art give perspective on one’s own culture? Art is a universal language that can convey cultural norms and values. Activity Description and Important Points Materials 1. Introducing this year’s theme a. Using the Rainforest ArtLink “HighLight” Theme handout, introduce the theme of the project. b. Ensure students understand that the subject of their artwork should illustrate a cultural value that is particularly meaningful to them. Rainforest ArtLink “HighLight” Theme handout 2. Conceiving and Planning the Art a. Introduction Re-examine together the six examples of art found in Lesson 1, identifying the communities each artist depicts (villagers, family,school, living creatures, etc.). Students will understand the variety of communities they are part of. Also review the artists' values. b. Students use the Rainforest ArtLink “HighLight”: Planning worksheet to develop sketches of ideas that illustrate a selected value that includes cultural details and the “who”, “what” and “where” of the scene. Students should confer with teacher regarding final ideas and available art media, tools and techniques that will be used to create final artwork. b. Students work on pieces. Creating artwork is individual to each class and student. c. Teachers will determine the time frame, keeping in mind the Creative Connections Rainforest ArtLink timeline for submitting student work. Necessary materials for chosen art medium (media) 4. Completing the Artist Description Sheet (ADS) a. Students complete the ADS, when finished, reflecting on their own artwork. b. Attach the ADS to the student’s final artwork. Students meet with teacher to get feedback during the planning and creating stages. Students use the Rainforest ArtLink Cultural Norms and Values Assessment Criteria (Rubric) to self-assess at any point during the planning and/or creating stages. Hold a Class Critique or Gallery Walk. By describing, explaining, comparing and analyzing, students discuss the cultural norms and values illustrated in their classmates’ artwork.
