#DearFutureMe
PREVENTION CHALLENGE
Overview
A cornerstone of NPW this year was the 2018 Dear Future
Me Prevention Challenge—a way for NPW partners, CSAP
and SAMHSA grantees, states, communities, and the
public to engage in NPW activities from February through
May. The #DearFutureMe Prevention Challenge asked
participants to write a letter to their future selves about
how they are investing in their futures. Participants also
could motivate others to take part.
To generate interest early, SAMHSA produced one full-
length promotional video and five “mini” versions featuring
people of varying ages and ethnicities speaking to their
older selves, each one spelling out the actions they are
taking today to create a healthier tomorrow.
Nearly 3,860 participants resulted in more than 18.7 million potential impressions across
social media from February through May.
• During NPW 2018 alone, the #DearFutureMe hashtag had 5.1 million potential social
media impressions from 680 participants.
• SAMHSA partners that participated included USAgov, which shares official U.S.
government information and services on the Internet; the U.S. Department of Health
& Human Services (HHS); the U.S. Department of Education; and the FDA’s Center
for Tobacco Products.
The NPW 2018 Prevention Challenge webpage featured details on this year’s interactive
social media activity to tie local and individual prevention efforts to the larger NPW
movement. Approximately 550 people visited the Prevention Challenge webpage, making
it the 7th most visited page on the website. Visitors spent roughly two and a half minutes
on this page, indicating a high level of engagement.
