The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA)
National Prevention Week (NPW) is an annual health observance dedicated
to raising awareness about the importance of substance use prevention
and positive mental health. Perhaps even more important, it is designed to
reinforce that healthier tomorrows require action today.
Held each year in May, NPW provides an opportunity for individuals,
organizations, and communities around the country to showcase how they are
both effective and creative in their efforts to make a difference in community
health.
SAMHSA challenged communities and individuals to help shape a positive
future for themselves by planning and sharing what actions they are taking
that will make that healthier future possible. The NPW 2018 theme of “Action
Today. Healthier Tomorrow.” communicated that a healthy life requires much
more than a one-time promise or pledge; it requires an investment that
grows every day through healthy choices.
