Top 5 Barn DIY Hacks

It’s the new year, and time for new ideas for your barn and storage areas. Since I’m not financially in a place do any renovating in my barn, I searched and found some great horsekeeping tips and cost saving ideas. Some, I’m storing away for future use, but some I’m planning to try immediately. Here are my top 5:

Chalk Board –Write feeding schedules, notes, or important phone numbers by using chalk board paint. For less than $10, you can turn any paintable surface in your barn into a chalkboard. With just a few brush strokes you have the perfect spot for special instructions or reminders for everyone in your barn!

Potties for Pole Work- Commercially produced pole cups are a bit pricey. Instead use toddler potties to create raised trotting pole cups. You can pick these up cheaply at dollar stores or resale shops. Look for rubbery not brittle plastic potties as these won’t shatter if accidentally trodden on.

Tree Stand Jump Standards- Perfect timing for this clever idea. Hit the Christmas clearance section and grab up the left over plastic tree stands. These make great bases for jumps or obstacles. One pinterest poster also used them for electric fence post holders.

Wash Halters in the Dishwasher- We all have those “just in case” extra halters collecting dust in our tack rooms. Bring back their color and sparkle by running them through your dishwasher. Using the pots and pans cycle will shine up the hardware too.

Display Horse Show Ribbons- When you can’t part with those ribbons you worked so hard for, you could recycle them either as a pillow or a blanket. Or this colorful alternative that displays them in clear jars for a visual reminder of your efforts!

Milk Jugs in your Horse’s Water- The winter version of this tip is to add salt water inside the jugs and float them on the surface to keep it from freezing. In the summer, freeze water inside them to keep water cool during extreme heat.
