Connecting through Education and Outreach
The Monarch Way Stations add to the beauty of our community, attract pollinators, and provide flowering plants necessary for monarch butterflies to produce the successive generations essential to sustain their migration to Mexico. These areas are also a source of environmental education for our community.
You can help Monarchs and other butterflies, too! Reduce your lawn and replace the grass with native flowers, such as goldenrod and black-eyed Susan. Also, fight the urge to“ clean-up” natural areas. Do not mow a property that does not belong to you and give the plants that butterflies need a chance to thrive.
Connecting through Education and Outreach
Community Workshop
In June 2017, FOL co-sponsored a workshop with Clean Water Frederick, Potomac Conservancy, and Clean Water Fund to help people understand the watershed challenges at Lake Linganore and shared the latest news on lake water quality and various ways homeowners can be part of the solution. It was well attended and is being explored to bring back this type of education annually.
Facebook Page
The Facebook page, Friends of the Lake * Lake Linganore at Eaglehead, started with 30 + members in January 2015. It has now grown to 906 fellow lake lovers. During the summer months, the page is the go-to place for the results of daily E. coli testing. Seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends, we post the results of the E. coli testing so that homeowners can make informed decisions about swimming in the lake. All year round, the page is a source of articles, messages, and photos about the natural world around us. Find FOL on Facebook and connect with others who care.
Lake Talk
Every month, Lake Talk features one to three articles from the FOL team. Look for the articles to stay informed and learn how you can help the lake and the world around you. During 2017 FOL:
• Covered water quality from many angles
• Featured lake-saving yards and their homeowners who participated in our Waterside Buffer Program
• Offered tips on how to be kind to your trees
• Featured lake-friendly landscaping strategies, including managing stormwater and dealing with autumn leaves
Web Page Addition
In 2017, FOL launched a new section of our web page to help homeowners who are interested in reforesting their property. This new section covers how to plan your planting, where to find trees and other supplies, and how to plant and maintain your fledgling forest. Check it out at https:// www. lakelinganore. org / reforestation.
