FRIENDS OF THE LAKE Friends of the Lake –2017 in Review Reforestation Efforts Continue During 2017, Friends of the Lake (FOL) recognized a 6-acre parcel of LLA land just north of Summerfi eld was ideal for preservation and reforestation. Aft er obtaining approval from the LLA Board of Directors, FOL worked with Frederick County’s Creek ReLeaf program to establish a permanent conservation easement on this property. Th is lovely area north of Steamboat Way contains a natural stream and spring which both feed into Lake Linganore. Th e county will plant native hardwood trees in the easement and maintain the planting for fi ve years, at no cost to Lake Linganore homeowners. Working with M a r y l a n d’s Healthy Forests and Healthy Waters program, FOL has several areas in fi nal planning for planting this spring. Under this program, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will provide and plant about 3½ acres of native trees and shrubs throughout the Lake Linganore community on spaces that are currently open turf. Th is eff ort will also be fully funded by the state. Converting open turf to tree-covered, natural areas not only saves money from mowing, but contributes to the health of Lake Linganore lakes and other waterways while providing habitat for wildlife. Th ese new reforestation areas continue FOL’s eff orts to mitigate the deforestation that results from ongoing development. FOL continues to maintain these areas with contractor support and volunteer eff ort. Many reforestation areas are densely planted to compensate for an expected high mortality rate. You can all help improve the success of these areas. If a tree tube has fallen over, return it to their upright position.
