The teams ranged from the grizzled veterans of James Ford, Jamie Howes, Ben James and their year 13 crew, to the stage struck newcomers of Samuel Ogle, Cameron Sewell and their crew. The results were some sleep deprived students and some fun films. In 2018, Concert Band’s former director and conductor, Mr Christopher Wilson, took up the position of Head of Department for music at St. John’s College in Hastings. This led to a brilliant uptake of the role by Mr Cargill with Mrs Cargill in assistance. Throughout the year the band covered many different styles of music from classical overtures with delicate flute parts to triumphant fanfare with trumpets blaring. This is in no small thanks to Mr Cargill’s incredible depth of knowledge of music and the experience that he possesses in the field of directing bands. Colla Voce During the year the Concert Band performed at the Lindisfarne Festival for Bands, which gave all students involved a great experience whether it be the last farewell for the year thirteen students who had performed there every year since starting high school, or the year nine students who were having their first taste of this incredible event which showcases the extraordinary talent that the Hawke’s Bay region has to offer. Being a part of Colla Voce for my final year of high school has been an absolute delight. With the excellent addition of the new director Mr Joe Christensen to the choir, we have been able to cover a wide range of repertoire from challenging acapella songs such as “That Lonesome Road” and “The Willow Song” to songs in foreign languages such as “Festival Sanctus” and “Besame Mucho”. Throughout the year the choir has performed in the Big Sing competition as well as the HNHS Music Festival and finally at senior prize giving. As the end of the year approaches, the choir must say goodbye to many strong characters who will embark on their journey outside of high school next year. These wonderful year 13s include Jude Snee, Alex Miller, Meg Kain, Philip Kim, Sam Harris, Kayla Simpson, Tess Gordon, Ayaan Salah, Bridget Berry and Hamish Jackson. The final performance of the year for Concert Band was the school Music Festival where the band accompanied accomplished soloists in Nesta Lade and Jamie Cornes. During this performance, the band also welcomed back Mr Wilson into the fold as he assisted in the performance. This year’s Concert Band group was overall well received and well liked as they put on great shows to entertain all. Eli Lesperance Emily Selfe 93
