Football is indeed alive at Havelock North High. Having
been a coach at St John’s College for the past decade, an all
boys high school, I was unsure of what to expect after taking
charge of the sport code for the boys this year. I need not have
been concerned and should have known that, with so many
young sons of Havelock North Wanderers in attendance,
the sport would be full of talented and enthusiastic young
players. Indeed, I have been really impressed with not
only the depth in the boys teams this year but also with the
strength and talent of the girls teams as well. It has been a
very successful year for all and I feel confident that this is
only the beginning of the development of a strong sports
code in the school.
and for all of their years as volunteer coaches. Finishing 1st
equal to NBHS is no easy feat and has been hard fought for.
As Paul and Murray step down, we welcome Bruce Barclay,
President of the Havelock North Wanderers and this year’s
Havelock North Wanderers Central League assistant coach
to take over as team coach and we wish them all the greatest
success for 2019.
I could spend quite some time describing the various success
stories of each team this season but would find it difficult
to do them justice in such a short space. However, I would
be remiss if I did not at least touch on some of the more
salient points. The 2nd XI, captained by Philip Kim, started
off in the 3rd division, stepping up into the 2nd, after three
games and winning the division in the knockout round. The
4th XI, a team comprised of the defunct 1st XV rugby squad
and managed by our own Mr Fenton, started the season five
games in and won the division outright. The Jr A, captained by
Luca Barclay and coached by Dion Adams, were undefeated
the entire season, including all matches played at the Central
6 Tournament, which they also won. In addition, both the Jr
B and C were also undefeated this season. The 1st XI girls,
coached by Sam Wallace came third in their division, losing
by only four points on the table. The 2nd XI girls, coached
by William Barnes, came first in their division, however, and
were also undefeated all season, having won the Central 6
Tournament as well.
Firstly, it must be noted that an enormous amount of work
goes on to make things happen both at school and at game
time. Staff, parents and friends are heavily involved in the
organisation, coaching and managing of the teams and
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all those
involved in football this year and hope that you enjoyed it so
much you will be returning to us in 2019. I would especially
like to thank Geoff Morrison, Paula Edilson and Helen
Reeves, who have all been indispensable to the organisation
of the girls, the gear and much more for many years now.
There were ten teams fielded this year; seven boys and
three girls teams. Out of the ten teams, the school had six
teams win their league, one second and one third. The 1st XI
were first equal to NBHS and only came second due to goal
difference. This is an outstanding result and one that we can
all be very proud of!
A huge congratulations to all teams for such a great season
of football. Having coached a team this year, I would like to
add how proud I have been of the excellent sportsmanship
shown and the positive attitude that Havelock North High
School students have displayed in attending trainings,
showing respect for their coaches and the opposition. Ka
mau te wehi!
The 1st XI have been under the tutelage of Paul Callaghan
and Murray Painter for the past five years in high school
and some of the boys from before that. This year was a
culmination of all of their efforts and a consistent coaching
team and style. They also deserve a special thanks and
congratulations for their dedication and result this season
