Canoe Polo 2018
Canoe polo at Havelock North High was a flourishing sport
this year, especially for our girls with six out of our eight
players making Hawkes Bay representative teams. There
were a number of competitions in the months of February,
March and April including the Art Deco cup, Secondary
Schools Regionals and Secondary School Nationals. Our
girls represented the school in these competitions coming
away with pleasing results. At regionals they placed 3rd
in their final against Napier Girls High School. This put
the team through to Secondary Schools Nationals held in
Feilding from the 16th-18th of March. Although they didn’t
come out with the results that they expected, Samantha
Spencer, Greer Edilson, Terri Morrison, Jacinta Redmond,
Olivia Cotter, Ellena Matthews, Ashlee Greaves and Catrin
Fuller represented HNHS with pride and played well. Greer
Edilson was named in the tournament team.
All in all the year for the girls was a success with the results
achieved. They are proud of their efforts and look forward
to the 2019 season.
The boys senior team also had many successes. The members
were Zane Shadbolt, Ben Hulena, Flynn Redmond, Jake
Mellors, Thomas Culham and new member Adriaan Steyn.
After a very close tournament at regional Champs, our
boys placed 3rd. At national champs the boys managed to
go through the entire tournament with only one loss, but
unfortunately due to points, they ended up in 5th place. At
this tournament Zane Shadbolt was named in the tournament
team.
In Hawkes Bay teams, Zane Shadbolt once again was chosen
for the men’s A2 team. Ben Hulena was chosen for the men’s
B1 team which won the B grade open championship in the
national competition.
In the Hawkes Bay Representative teams this year Ashlee
and Catrin played for B4 women’s team who got 4th in B
grade. Jacinta and Terri played for B1 and won the same
grade. Greer and Samantha played for the Hawkes Bay
womens A grade team who managed 7th in their division.
Adriaan once again represented his home country of
Namibia at the same U21 World Championships as Greer.
Adriaan was the goalie of the team, and the team finished a
credible 12th.
Greer was selected in the New Zealand Under 21 women’s
team who travelled to Canada to compete in the World
Championships. The team came away with a bronze medal.
Our junior players have some exciting players coming
through the ranks. The Year 9 mixed team had a couple of
famous victories over the Year 10 boys during the winter
league, so we look forward to seeing those players progress
to the senior levels in the years to come.
Ashlee, Catrin, Greer, Jacinta, Samantha and Terri played
in the school winter league season. They came third in
the school premier grade only losing to Napier Boys High
School and St John’s College.
