Mosibodi Whitehead: Kaya FM FROM BOTANY TO SPORTS PRESENTING Written by: Tshepiso Tshabalala O ne thing about passion is that it is like a ghost, it always has a way to haunt you and it will find you no matter where in the world you may be. You can try to run from it as you may, but something must give, passion will always win. Mosibodi Whitehead, a sports presenter at Kaya FM is a living testimony of that. The sports fanatic was born in Swaziland to South African parents who were in exile, he holds a Bsc in Botany from University of Cape Town and yet his degree did not stop him doing what he loves most. “I’ve always loved sports, the passion was always there, tried every sport there is and was never a pro at it,” says Whitehead. “I ran an athletics website in my varsity days, in 2009 got an opportunity to work at Kaya FM”, he adds.Whitehead, was filled with joy and light when he spoke about his love for sports and when he first joined Kaya FM, one would not try too hard to see that the man is sports driven. He covered the 2010 World Cup, ran The Comrades Marathon in 2016 even though he says he almost took the whole day to complete the race, his love for sports kept him focused throughout the race, he also cycles to relax. 8 He mentioned cricket as his ultimate favourite sport and if he were afforded the opportunity to be a player or coach he would choose to be a coach. “I’d be Clive Barker, I had the priv- ilege to meet the guy, what a hum- ble man, he never said anything bad about his players” says Whitehead with a smile. His memorable sporting event is when Bafana Bafana won against Tunisia. “The 1996 match between Bafana Bafana and Tunisia has to be one of my most memorable moments, I was in the stadium that day,” Whitehead says with elation on his face. Whitehead is motivated by young athletes, he says that focus should be shifted to young talented children. That is why he along with other teammates recently developed an organization called the Afropolitan Sports, the aim of the initiative is to help young talented kids to live up to their sporting talents. Whitehead says getting married and becoming a father are his greatest achievements in life, both expe- riences added to his growth and changed his perspective.
