IT TAKES MORE THAN BEING ARTICULATE
TO BE A GREAT SPORTS PRESENTER AND
COMMENTATOR.
The best radio sports presenters and commentators are able to paint
a vivid picture for the listener.
D
uring the 2018 FIFA World
Cup, I found myself at a
friend’s place who didn’t have
a TV. We had two options, either
we go to a sports bar or listen to
the live match on radio. Most of the
time we’d opt for the latter to avoid
a crowd at sports bars. For us, it
wasn’t that hard to listen to a live
soccer match on radio because that’s
basically how we grew up. I have to
say I have a new-found respect
for sports commentators on radio
because of how they’re able to paint
a clear picture for the listener.
In this issue we talk to sports
presenters and commentators from
different radio stations and learn
about what it takes to do what they
do. One of the requirements is to
be passionate about sports so that
you may be able to convey authentic
information to the listeners. We also
look at a few women in the sports
presenting space which is still male
dominated. On the cover, we have
award winning Sports presenter
Rachel Makhura from Channel
Africa and Thabiso Mosia from
SAFM; we also get exclusive
interviews from seasoned sports
presenters like Lebo Motsoeli,
Owen Hannie, Duran Collett,
Thabiso Ntema and Ikwekwezi FM’s
sports commentator Tuis Mgidi.
I present to you the Sports Issue.
Stay tuned.
