s a teacher, Joseph Tsima
a.k.a Big Joe used to be
involved in all kind of sports
with the students. “I taught
IsiNdebele in school and was also
a sports coach,” shares Big Joe. It
wasn’t far fetched that he had all the
requirements to be a sports anchor
on an IsiNdebele speaking radio
station. During his time as a teacher,
Big Joe got involved in radio dramas
with Ikwekwezi FM and while he was
there he heard about an opening for
a sports presenter on the same
radio station.
It turns out he was the right man for
the job and has been with the sta-
tion for more than a decade. Since
he started, Big Joe has interviewed
big names in the sporting world like
Irvin Khoza, Stuart Baxter, Mimi
Mthethwa, former sports minister
Fikile Mbalula just to name a few.
As a sports presenter, he is
mostly studio bound and source
information by making calls to
the relevant people.

“We prepare content that our
listeners can relate to and include
regional sports information in our
bulletins,” says Big Joe.
As a sports fanatic, watching sports
all the time comes naturally to him
hence he gets to be updated with
everything from minor to major
leagues. Unlike some men who can’t
bring themselves to watching female
soccer for the entire 90 minutes,
Big Joe enjoys to watch the
ladies kick a ball around and always
include it in his sports bulletin. .
Big Joe says his big career high-
lights are when he gets feedback
from the listeners commending him
for job well done. Some of his fa-
vourite sports people include Elton
Jantjies, Kagiso Rabada, Percy Tau,
Zolani Tete just to name a few.
91.8 FM is Ikwekwezi FM’s
frequency in Middleburg.
Stay tuned.
