The Waves Project - Symphonic Polyrhythm The Waves Project represents a new style of orchestral music in which complex polyrhythms, harmonic progressions and stunning percussion sounds merge in a dramatic and unique way. The orchestra is a rhythm generator corresponding with breath-taking drum performances, polyrhythmic choir parts and melodies growing out of surprising harmonic progressions. It is music that touches every level of human existence. The Waves Project was founded by Reinhard Flatischler and Johnny Bertl, two Viennese composers from different backgrounds. Their highly specialised skills enable them to co-create music which one person could never create alone. The underlying polyrhythmic structures in all compositions compare to the musical wisdom inherent in a fugue written by J. S. Bach. The overlapping polyrhythmic structures with their primal rhythmic movements radiate the purity of natural laws. When polyrhythmic structures come together with melodic and harmonic progressions and seldom heard percussion sounds, the unique music style of the Waves Project becomes alive. Space Beyond Space Suite for Orchestra, Choir and Percussion in 8 movements Flatischler / Bertl Space Beyond Space is the second composition commissioned by Auckland Choral and today marks its world premiere. Reinhard Flatischler joins Grammy nominee Túpac Mantilla on solo drums performing alongside the other percussionists. Newest science assumes that space is both extremely full and unimaginably tense while at the same time it appears completely empty. What a mystery! The key for composing such a piece is the surrender to a state of “not knowing”, relying solely on the trust that inspiration will come at the 4
