VIVALDI FOUR SEASONS
Led by early-music specialist Nicholas McGegan, this program features two BSO violinists in Vivaldi’ s beloved Four Seasons. Experience the enchanting incidental music Schubert wrote for the Viennese stage play, Rosamunde. Schumann ' s Konzertstück, or Concert Piece for Four Horns, is almost as spectacular to see as it is to hear.

RESPIGHI PINES OF ROME
Respighi ' s Pines of Rome and the composer ' s lesser-known but infectiously brilliant gem, Brazilian Impressions, are the centerpiece of this program. This concert also features the works of two powerhouse women composers, including Jennifer Higdon’ s Low Brass Concerto, co-commissioned by the BSO. Percussionist Colin Currie returns with a new concerto by Scottish composer Helen Grime.

Marin Alsop conducts the world premiere of a BSO commission for orchestra and chorus by popular British composer Roxanna Panufnik. The chorus is also featured in Bernstein’ s Chichester Psalms, which includes one of his most haunting melodies, and Villa-Lobos’ Chôros No. 10, a colorful and rhythmically propulsive work inspired by popular Brazilian music. Copland’ s Appalachian Spring, created as ballet music for Martha Graham, remains one of the most beloved expressions of the American spirit.

Renowned German pianist Lars Vogt is showcased in Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, written when the composer was only in his mid-twenties. Principal Guest Conductor Markus Stenz leads the Orchestra in Schoenberg’ s lush, late-Romantic orchestral tone poem, Pelléas und Mélisande.

Back by popular demand, Marin Alsop leads the BSO and the Morgan State University Choir as well as vocal soloists in a semi-staged production of Porgy and Bess. Featuring such well-known hits as“ Summertime” and“ It Ain’ t Necessarily So,” Gershwin’ s jazzy folk opera endures as an American classic since its 1935 premiere.
