BEETHOVEN EROICA SYMPHONY
Marin Alsop opens the season with Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony,
a work that changed the course of music history. Pulitzer Prize-
winning composer Joseph Schwantner wrote his New Morning
for the World for orchestra and narrator, capturing some of Martin
Luther King, Jr.’s most eloquent words. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson
returns to play Rachmaninoff’s scintillating Rhapsody on a Theme
of Paganini.

VIOLINIST JOSHUA BELL
One of today’s hottest young conductors, Romanian-born Cristian
Măcelaru is joined by world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell in
Dvořák’s romantic and stunningly beautiful Violin Concerto,
perfectly designed to show off Bell’s virtuosic tone and technical
command. Vaughan Williams’ dramatic Symphony No. 4 is one of
the most revered symphonies of the 20th century.

SIBELIUS VIOLIN CONCERTO
Principal Guest Conductor Markus Stenz conducts an eclectic
program including the beautiful Siegfried Idyll that Richard Wagner
wrote for his wife, Cosima. In response to failing his violin audition
with the Vienna Philharmonic, Sibelius composed one of the most
technically challenging violin concertos ever written. Latvian
violinist Baiba Skride is up to the task and joins the BSO for the
performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Haydn’s Symphony
No. 104, "London," is the composer's most regal symphony, filled
with the sounds of trumpets and timpani.
