SIBELIUS SYMPHONIES
Calling all Sibelius fans! The composer's final symphonies, No. 6 and
No. 7, are led by one of the world’s consummate Sibelius interpreters,
Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu. The Sixth is delicately beautiful and
mysterious, and the Seventh features one of the most powerful endings
in classical music. Norwegian trumpet virtuoso Tine Thing Helseth joins
the BSO for a stunning showpiece, the Hummel Trumpet Concerto,
as well as the North American premiere of Penderecki’s Concertino
for Trumpet and Orchestra.

RESPIGHI PINES OF ROME
Respighi's Pines of Rome and the composer's lesser-known but infectiously
brilliant gem, Brazilian Impressions, are the centerpiece of this program. This
concert also features the works of two powerhouse women composers,
including Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto, co-commissioned by the
BSO. Percussionist Colin Currie returns with a new concerto by Scottish
composer Helen Grime.

APPALACHIAN SPRING
Marin Alsop conducts the world premiere of a BSO commission for
orchestra and chorus by popular British composer Roxanna Panufnik. The
chorus is also featured in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, which includes one
of his most haunting melodies, and Villa-Lobos’ Chôros No. 10, a colorful and
rhythmically propulsive work inspired by popular Brazilian music. Copland’s
Appalachian Spring, created as ballet music for Martha Graham, remains
one of the most beloved expressions of the American spirit.
