MARY CROWE, Ph.D. Co-Chair Florida Southern College POLK COUNTY TOM DEARDORFF Co-Chair Polk County BoCC 5 YEARS OF PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE DATA (2014-2018) WHEN DID CRASHES OCCUR? HOW MANY CRASHES INVOLVING BICYCLISTS & PEDESTRIANS OCCURRED IN POLK COUNTY OVER 5 YEARS (2014-2018)? LEFT: On May 15, 2019 members of the community participated in the Ride & Walk of Silence around Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland. This event raised awareness of pedestrians and cyclists’ rights to public roadways as well as honored those pedestrians and cyclists who have been injured or killed. In Polk County, a pedestrian or bicyclist dies every two weeks in a traffic crash. These persons are more than a statistic - everyone has a name and loved ones who will miss them dearly. Every traffic fatality is a tragedy. The Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Team is working with community partners towards a future with zero traffic-related fatalities. Anything less is a continuing tragedy. Success will rely on a “3-E” approach: Engineering (safer streets), Education (better safety habits) and Enforcement (everyone following the rules of the road). — TOM DEARDORFF, Executive Director, Polk TPO 33 2015 2016 204 195 222 239 161 169 165 STREET OWNERS 2018 204 189 193 Sept 208 222 Nov Pedestrians or cyclists INJURED A DAY PEDESTRIAN CRASHES VS IN FDOT DISTRICT 1 PEDESTRIAN CRASHES 3.49 IN POLK BICYCLE CRASHES 1,076 INJURIES 94 FATALITIES 1 in 5 pedestrians hit by motorists were killed or severely injured BICYCLE CRASHES 696 INJURIES 21 FATALITIES 1 in 9 bicyclists hit by motorists were killed or severely injured occurred in daylight This Data Applies to Polk County MILLIE BROWN Florida DOT 27% State JENNIFER CIPRIANO Lakeland Regional Health 46% Local 10% County JULIA DAVIS Polk TPO 3% Other 20% Parking Lot 55% Mid-block 22% Intersection 4% Other 5% Parking Lot 44% Mid-block 47% Intersection DIANA DEGROOT Lakeland Regional Health BRYAN DORMAN Bartow Police Department MICHAEL O.
