A grey dusk threatens rain in sporadic vertical brush marks. A dark promon-
tory dives, whale-like, into an opaque sea. On its back it carries a great fire,
sparks rocketing into the cloud. A man in his shirtsleeves, comfortable in his
folding chair, leans back, his face and forearms glowing. Canada’s extended
coastlines — Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic and lakeshores — represent sites of both
commerce and sanctuary. Amelia Alcock-White dwells on the latter, often
painting our leisurely interactions with water — wading, swimming, diving
or paddling. She has studied and exhibited her work across North America and
is represented in the Canada Council’s Art Bank collection. Here, her character
is surrounded by the elements; sparks and waves of contemplation.
