Existing Conditions Age Figure 1-2 Glenview Village Population Pyramid for Year 2000 The most important demographic characteristic of a population is its age-gender structure. Nationally, it is recognized that the U.S. population is aging. Population aging is a shift in the distribution of a country’s population towards older ages and this trend is reflected locally. Glenview’s population has aged by 10% from 2000 to 2010. The median age for Glenview in 2010 was 45.5 years compared to the median age in 2000, which was 41.3 years. Age-gender pyramids (also known as population pyramids) graphically display total population separated by age and gender. As illustrated in Figures 1-2 and 1-3, male and female residents are separated vertically. Female residents are represented on the right in red and male residents are represented on the left in blue. The figure is further separated horizontally by age, sorted by youngest on the bottom to the oldest on the top. Age-gender pyramids display the percentage or actual amount of a population broken down by gender and age in five-year age increments. Graphically illustrating population in this way allows decision-makers to see long-term population trends.
