The Cultural Arts department ’ s summer and March Break day camps both set new attendance records in 2017 .
313 children took part in summer camp and another 45 kids attended March Break . Over the course of the summer , participants were enrolled in 1,754 individual Cultural Arts and Athletic camp offerings .
Efforts were undertaken to ensure that all camps were accessible to special needs children . This led to the Columbus Centre camps having the highest-ever number of special needs campers .
Another record was set for the number of Leaders in Training , many of whom will become counsellors in future years .
Planning began on new camp offerings for 2018 including a team-based Survivor-style camp , a LEGO / Building camp , a Magic camp and , for March Break 2018 , “ Around the World ” - themed Ultimate Experience camps where campers will “ visit ” various places around the world .
Summer Camp
The largest attendance growth in 2017 came from younger children in the “ Kinders ” and “ Explorers ” groups , with many first-time campers enrolling . Growing numbers meant that , for the first time ever , every camp offering proceeded , many at capacity registration . Most popular among the camp options were the Ultimate Experience camps , offering kids a variety of activities .
March Break
For the first time ever , only full-day camp options were offered during the 2017 March Break . Programming included a visit from “ Hands on Exotics ,” which brought in animals from distant parts of the world and taught the kids about them . It was a big hit !
